Evaluate material claims, processing evidence, product safety, and chain-of-custody records without relying on vague labels.

A textile is not automatically “sustainable” because it uses one preferred fiber, carries one certificate, or makes one environmental claim. A defensible assessment identifies the exact product and scope, the issue being measured, the supply-chain stage, the evidence, and the limitations. Certification can verify defined criteria; it does not answer every environmental or social question.

What is in the product?

Fiber percentages and recycled or organic content claims need product-level records that connect the material to the delivered goods.

Processing

How was it made?

Wet processing, chemistry, energy, water, emissions, and waste are distinct issues. One material claim does not verify every mill process.

Product safety

What was tested?

Restricted-substance testing can address harmful substances in a tested article, but it is not the same as full supply-chain environmental certification.

Chain of custody

Can the claim follow the goods?

Scope certificates establish certified operations; transaction documents and traceability records connect specific shipments and products.

What major textile standards cover

Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS covers processing and chain-of-custody requirements for textiles made with certified organic fibers, including environmental, chemical, quality, and social criteria within its stated scope. The applicable standard version and labeling grade matter. GOTS released Version 8.0 in March 2026 with a transition period before it becomes mandatory on 1 March 2027; buyers should verify which version governs a current order.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

STANDARD 100 is a product label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Testing criteria depend on the product class and intended skin contact. A valid certificate should match the article, certificate holder, and scope; the label should not be presented as proof of organic fiber or an entire factory’s environmental performance.

Global Recycled Standard and Recycled Claim Standard

Textile Exchange’s GRS and RCS use chain-of-custody requirements to verify recycled material claims. GRS adds processing-related environmental, chemical, and social requirements. Under the current GRS framework, products entering the business-to-business system may contain at least 20% recycled material, while consumer-facing GRS labeling requires at least 50%. Those thresholds should not be collapsed into one claim.

A logo is not the evidence file

Verify the certificate number, holder, product scope, validity dates, issuing body, applicable standard version, and the transaction or shipment documents required for the claim.

Questions for suppliers

  1. What exact claim is proposed, and for which fiber, component, product, color, and order?
  2. Which standard and version apply, and is the supplier’s current certificate in scope for the process and product?
  3. What records connect the certified material to this shipment?
  4. Which production stages are subcontracted, and how are those sites covered?
  5. What does the evidence not verify, and what additional testing or due diligence is needed?

Claims must also match labeling and market rules. Marketing language such as “eco-friendly,” “green,” or “fully sustainable” is too broad without a defined basis. Prefer narrow statements that describe what was verified and avoid extending a certificate beyond its scope.

Build a product-level evidence trail

Start with the bill of materials and identify every component carrying a claim. Collect valid supplier certificates, product scopes, transaction records, test reports, and declarations in a controlled file. Confirm that purchase orders, production records, care and fiber labels, packaging, and public claims describe the same product.

Environmental decisions also involve trade-offs. Durability, care, yield, chemical management, energy source, logistics, repairability, and end-of-use systems can matter alongside fiber choice. Comparing materials across multiple impact categories is more credible than assigning one universal ranking.
